Blended Learning (Remote learning)

Remote education provision: Information for parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to children and parents/ carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (bubbles) to remain at home. 

For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this web page.

When will my child's class teacher be available to email or talk?

Staff at school will set work each day between 8:30am - 3:30pm. Teachers will usually set work each morning and then work will be marked and responded to in the afternoons. Staff will be available to email or respond to submitted work or queries again between the hours of 8:30am - 3:30pm. They may not respond immediately due to classroom teaching commitments and meetings but will regularly check Seesaw/ Tapestry and their emails and get back to parents/ carers and children as soon as they can. 

Staff will not respond out of the above hours, but will ensure they respond the next day at the first convenient time.  School do not expect children to submit work at the weekends or out of school hours (out of 8:30am-3:30pm) and staff will not respond to out of hours. 

The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home

A child's first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. 

 

What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of children being sent home?

Children in F1 and FS2 will be set up already on Tapestry. Parents will have been sent an invitation to join Tapestry at the start of the academic year  (September). Any parents who have not accepted the invite will be rung directly by the class teacher and talked through how to set themselves up.  During the first couple of days of remote education staff will set some tasks that relate to the planned curriculum.  They will then communicate with parents/carers after checking that all children are accessing these learning tasks. If children have not accessed them staff will telephone parents/ carers directly to talk them through any concerns or problems. 

Children in KS1 (Y1 & Y2) will already be set up on Seesaw. Parents will have been sent an invitation to download the Seesaw APP and details of their child's log on and password. This will have been sent in September. During the first couple of days of remote education, staff will set some tasks that relate to the planned curriculum. They will then monitor which children are submitting them and any who are not, they will directly contact parents/ carers and talk them through any concerns or problems they are having. 

 

Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Your child will be taught the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. However, we may need to make some adaptations in some subjects. For example in art we need to consider resource implications and in some aspects of P.E learning such as team games and gymnastics may need to be adapted due to children not having access to other children or the equipment needed. 

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We expect that remote (including remote teaching and independent work) work will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:

  • Nursery - up to 30 minutes per day
  • Foundation stage 2  1.5 - 2 hours a day
  • Key stage  1 - 3 hours a day

How do I access my child's learning?

 

Children in the Foundation stage classes (Pandas, Hippos and FS2 children in Parrots) will access their learning via an online learning tool called Tapestry. Details are sent out to parents about how to log on and access their child's learning via email and a letter. If you are struggling with this, please speak or email your child's class teacher. 

Children in Key stage 1 classes (Y1 Parrots, Koalas, Tigers & Orangutans) will access their learning via an online learning tool called Seesaw. Details have been sent out to parents/carers about how to log on and access their child's learning via email and a letter. Again, if you are struggling with this, please speak to your child's class teacher.

If your child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some children may not have access to suitable online devices at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • We keep the lines of communication open with parents/carers making regular phone calls home and giving parents/carers the opportunity to discuss challenges in remote learning they face.
  • Through our school budget and catch - up funding we purchased additional Acer laptops for the sole purpose of lending to children who had no access to IT equipment. 
  • We surveyed all parents at parents evening in the autumn term and asked them directly about access to suitable IT equipment so in the need of a bubble closing due to COVID we could get a laptop out to the children who needed one quickly. 
  • In the event of the whole school community being unable to attend school and more children than devices being available, we will make phone calls to all parents/ carers who indicate they do not have suitable IT equipment and then prioritise children who are pupil premium, have several siblings from our school and have absolutely no access to any device (including a smart phone) and then we will lend a laptop to them for the duration of the time they are away from school. There will be a clear agreement in place for these devices as they are owned by the school and parents will be asked to sign an agreement before they take the device home. An example of an agreement is near the bottom of this page. 
  • It is our aim to ensure all children who attend our school have some type of device to work on during a national lockdown and if we needed to would purchase additional devices to support these children and families. 

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach children remotely:

  • Recorded teaching (e.g. recordings made by the class teacher or TA, Oak Academy etc)
  • Commercially available websites supporting the teaching of specific subjects or areas, including video clips or sequences
  • Daily recorded story time 
  • 4 learning challenges each day (phonics, literacy/ English, maths and topic) set on Tapestry or Seesaw
  • Some learning challenges based upon practical activities and some that children complete on IT devices

 

Engagement and feedback

What are your expectations for my child's engagement and the support that we as parents/ carers should provide at home?

  • We expect all children/ parents or carers to log on daily to either Tapestry or Seesaw. 
  • We expect all children to complete the work that has been set if they are working at home.
  • We expect parents/ carers to facilitate their child in order for them to have a quiet time and space for part of the day so they can concentrate.
  • We expect parents/carers to support young children in understanding what is being asked of them and help them in reading  instructions sent by the teacher.
  • We expect parents/ carers to support very young children in sending back their work and submitting it online. 
  • We expect parents/ carers to contact their child's class teacher if they need help or support with anything to do with remote learning.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Work will be set online each morning through Tapestry or Seesaw and teachers will add a pre recorded video introducing one or more of the activities and demonstrating a teaching point.

Any submitted work will be marked and commented upon in the afternoons. The final response time from staff each day will be 3:30pm. Work will not be looked at after that and will be marked the next day. 

Teachers will monitor each day who is not submitting work and make telephone calls home to find out why. They will aim to work together with parents/ carers to rectify this. 

Parents/ carers are encouraged to communicate with teachers via email, phone calls and messages on Seesaw or Tapestry. We also encourage parents/ carers to communicate with school via our closed Facebook group but will only respond during the hours of 8:30am - 6pm Monday - Friday. We encourage parents to email or phone school for queries around log on details and specific information related to remote learning and not use Facebook. 

 

Additional support for pupils with particular needs

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

 

We recognise that some children, for example some children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those children in the following ways:

  • Offer some children who are in the most need, a place in school for part/ all of the week so they can access learning
  • Offer all children with an EHCP a place full time in school

 

 

Remote education for self-isolating pupils

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, we aim to send their work either daily or the whole week's work in one go. With this said though, if the teacher is in class full time, this may differ slightly due to time constraints on some days. We aim to communicate via email, telephone and messages on Seesaw/ Tapestry with parents/carers throughout this time. Feedback to children remains the same and staff will ensure all learning tasks that children submit are responded within 24 hours. The times that staff may set work and respond to work for individual children who are self isolating will be between 9am - 4.30pm due to staff having to be within the classroom.
