Important information about Hippo Class
Welcome to Hippo Class we are a Foundation Stage Two Class. Our Learning this half term will be based around the topic 'Over and Under the Ocean'. See below for details on what we are learning in our different curriculum areas . Children will have their books changed once a week. PE will be on a Wednesday Morning. PE kits will be needed for this and currently the children need to come to school in their PE kits. It is important to name all clothing in PE kits. This way we can make sure all items are returned to the correct person
Homework will be based on reading and sound recognition and is also set on Tapestry our online journal . The work will be sent home on a Friday and will be based on sounds the children will be learning in class. When reading the children will gain stickers and certificates when they have achieved 25 reads at home and every 25 steps thereafter. You can monitor their progress on the poster found in the class window. The children are also now a member of "Bug Club" an online reading hub where the children will be able to access reading books. Log in and see which books have been chosen for you!
In Literacy this half term our special stories are 'What the Ladybird Heard' , 'Billy's Bucket' and 'The Fish Who Could Wish'. The children will be making a list of what to pack into their suitcase to go on holiday, we will make some giant seaside pictures on big pieces of paper and using our phonics knowledge to label them. The children will write a postcard to someone special and finish with an ice-cream surprise. We will focus on seaside themed books for our shared reading and will focus on both fiction and non-fiction texts.
In Our Mathematics we take a mastery approach and learn our numbers by having a number we focus on over two weeks this enables us to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding about that number. We really enjoy watching 'Numberblocks' to help us learn the number. We will partition the numbers to help us add and subtract using a range of resources and methods including, tens frames, part-part whole and Numicon. We count recognise and order these numbers and use both the inside and the outside environments to help us learn. We will also be focussing on exploring time, measuring weight and learning about doubling and halving numbers.
Through our topic this half term we will learn about the seaside and how it has changed over time. We will look at photographs as evidence. We will look at how we as human change overtime. We will use the apps on the iPads to apply our programming skills. Finally we are really excited to receive some caterpillars in class to watch grow into butterflies discussing the changes that occur as they become beautiful butterflies!
In our Expressive Arts and Design we encourage the children to improve their creative skills such as cutting, twisting, stretching and folding. We use lots of different media such as paint, chalks and collage. We use role-play areas inside and outside to encourage imagination and will focus these on seaside themes this half term. The children will be using a range of collage techniques to create different minibeasts.
We continue to follow the Charanga music scheme and listen and respond to different styles of music and explore pulse rhythm and pitch.
Our Jigsaw Theme (PSE/RHSE curriculum) is 'Changing Me' We always think about our British Values and our focus this half term will be to focus on all of the British Values already covered this year.
