Important information about Hippo Class

Welcome to Hippo Class we are a Foundation Stage Two Class. Our Learning this half term will be based around the topic  'Myths and Legends'.   See below for details on what we are learning in our different curriculum areas . Children will have their books changed once a week. PE will be on a  Wednesday Morning. PE kits will be needed for this and currently the children need to come to school in their PE kits. It is important to name all clothing in PE kits. This way we can make sure all items are returned to the correct person

Homework will be based  on reading and sound recognition and is also set on Tapestry our online journal . The work will be sent home on a Friday and will be based on sounds the children will be learning in class.  When reading the children will gain stickers and certificates when they have achieved 25 reads at home and every 25 steps thereafter. You can monitor their progress on the poster found in the class window. The children are also now a member of "Bug Club" and online reading hub where the children will be able to access reading books. Log in and see which books have been chosen for you!

In Literacy this half term our special stories are ' Jack and the Beanstalk' , 'There's a Dragon in my Book' and 'That's not my Dragon '.  The children will be growing beans and will write instructions on how to plant and care for the bean. We will use the role play areas both inside and outside to recreate our own Dragon stories and then become authors and create our own "That's not my Dragon " books.

In Our Mathematics we take a mastery approach and learn our numbers by having a number of the week. We really enjoy watching  'Numberblocks'  to help us learn the number. We count, order, recognise and form these  numbers as well as understanding 'more' and 'less' as a concept as well as partitioning numbers to help us to add and subtract using a variety of methods such as the Part-Part Whole method, Tens Frames and Numicon. We will also measure our beans as they grow and use a timer in our maths activities.  We use our outside area and maths area in the classroom to encourage independence and enjoyment in learning new maths skills.

Understanding the World

Through our topic  this half term we will learn about change and passing of time in our own lives. We will investigate how things grow and change as we watch our beanstalk grow. The children will also learn how it is important to stay healthy and what they can do to remain healthy. We will use basic algorithms to program our toy Beebots.  We will also be celebrating Easter and will do some yummy Easter baking!

In Science week we will be looking at exciting investigations that are easy and safe to do but show different scientific concepts! Warning some of the activities will be messy!!

In our Creative Development we encourage the children to improve their creative skills such as cutting, twisting, stretching and folding. We use lots of different media such as paint, chalks and collage. We use role-play areas inside and outside to encourage imagination. This half term we will become designers and will investigate methods of fixing and joining using a range of tools and techniques. They will use this learning to make a bag to carry their dragon egg in.

We continue to follow the Charanga music scheme and listen and respond to different styles of music and explore pulse rhythm and pitch.

Jigsaw (PSE/PSHE) and British Values.

Our Jigsaw Theme (PSE/RHSE curriculum) is "Healthy Me  "  Where we will focus on how it is important to be healthy and what lifestyle we need to follow to remain healthy  We always think about our British Values and our focus this half term will be on "Mutual  Tolerance ".
