Important Information for Hippo Class.
Welcome to Hippo Class we are a mixed Year 1 and 2 class. We are the Happy Helpful Hippos and we are encouraged to do the best we can in all areas. Our Learning this half term will be based around the topic 'Food Glorious Food' See below for details on what we are learning in our different curriculum areas . Children will have their reading books changed once a week. The children's progress is shown on a chart displayed in the window of the classroom. The children receive a sticker in their reading diaries for each 25 reads they do. They also receive other treats for passing specific milestones along the way! PE will be on a Tuesday afternoon and on a Wednesday. PE kits will be needed for this and currently the children need to come to school in their PE kits. All earrings will need to be covered by plasters/tape on these days for health and safety. Please provide this in class for your child.
Can all items of clothing be named that way we can return it to you as soon as possible. In the wintertime can ALL items be named this includes gloves, hats and scarfs as these are usually the items that go walkabout!
During the week the children have continuous provision which are activities the children can access independently often based on topic ideas and cover the whole of the curriculum. The year one children continue the Rainbow Challenges into the Autumn Term. One of our activities this half term is a home corner.
Homework is set on a Friday to be returned or marked as done online on a Wednesday. It is usually based on activities such as Education City. We also add work on SEESAW such as Maths activities and Topic homework. It is really important this is done by the children as it usually consolidates skills, activities or ideas that the children have already covered in class. Thank you for your help in this area.
In English this half term our stories are 'Oliver's Fruit Salad' , 'Don't Forget the Bacon' and ' The Day the Bananas Went Bad. These will be done in our topic Food Glorious Food. When reading Oliver's Fruit Salad we will be making a shopping list. When reading Don't Forget the Bacon we will focus on recounting the story writing sentences to describe what was bought or seen in the shop. Finally when reading The Day the Bananas Went Bad we will be creating a character description.
Through out the half term we will also focus on grammar including super sentences, including sentence types and expanded noun phrases in year 2 and year one the use of adjectives and the correct punctuation of a sentence. The children will also be encouraged to use these in their writing and learn about them in their shared reading. Through all of this we will also continue with our phonics teaching using our new Super Sonic Phonics Scheme.
In Our Mathematics we take a mastery approach. In year one this half term we will focus in year one on place value to 10, addition and subtraction and shape and pattern. In year two we will work towards place value to 100, addition and subtraction to 100 and shape.
In our science lessons we will investigate "The Human Body" and we will focus on what we need to stay healthy including the importance of diet and exercise. Also about personal hygiene.
We will continue to do Forest Schools. Hippos day will be on a Monday and the dates will be given here once known.
In our our topic work this half term we will focus in Geography on learning the countries that make up the United Kingdom. We will also focus on our own local area visiting important parts of the village such as the shops and the churches the date of this TBC. In Computing, in Year 2, we will focus on the use the Google Chromebooks using Paint as a program and the use of computing Art using Purple Mash to create a self portrait and the year 2 children will save these in the folders. In Design and Technology the children will create a fruit salad and design and evaluate their own made fruit salad.
We continue to follow the Charanga music scheme and listen and respond to different styles of music and explore pulse rhythm and pitch with the year one children learning about being "Hey you " and the year two children will be learning " Hands, Feet ,Heart. Within Religious Education we will be focusing on the topic of “ Myself and caring for others" in Year 1 and "Belonging " in year 2 . The children will learn what it is to belong to a group and what happens in a Christening.
We will also continue to visit the allotments the dates TBC.
Our Jigsaw Theme (PSE/RHSE curriculum) is 'Being Me In My World' We always think about our British Values and our focus this half term will be based on Democracy.
