Pupil Premium/ Free school meals
John T. Rice Infant and Nursery School is an averaged sized infant school, situated on the Newlands estate which is part of the Forest Town area of Mansfield. The school lies a short distance away from both the Newark-Mansfield boundary. The school has been growing in size over the last few years with 150 children on roll in full time school and 39 children in Nursery (13 of which are 30 hours). The school serves an ex-mining community with approximately half of our children residing in Forest Town East (our catchment area) and the rest coming from out of catchment. The majority of these children reside in Clipstone. In comparison with national figures, both of these areas have high levels of social disadvantage. The IDACI index shows the school lies within the most deprived 20% of all neighbourhoods in the country as can be seen in the map below.
At the start of the academic year 2023-2024, there were 23.3% of children eligible for Pupil Premium Funding. It is our aim that children who are eligible for Pupil Premium Funding attain in line with children who do not receive Pupil Premium Funding and through our Pupil Premium Strategy below we support these pupils in achieving this. The strategies detailed in our Pupil premium plan are based upon EEF research and reflect the requirements in the pupil premium conditions of grant document.
Please read the information below which gives details of our Pupil Premium Grant and strategy and how we allocate the funding. This is written at the start of each academic year and reviewed regularly throughout the year.

Applying for pupil premium/ free school meals
Pupils in receipt of pupil premium funding will receive free school meals (as they move to the junior school), additional intervention at our school in order to ensure they make the very best possible progress and attain as well as they can. In addition to this, pupil premium children are eligible to come to after school club free of charge. For families in receipt of pupil premium the school endeavour to look at the need of the pupil and provide bespoke support at the point of need.

Qualifying benefits
Free school meals are available to pupils in receipt of, or whose parents are in receipt of, one or more of the qualifying benefits:
- Universal Credit (provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400, as assessed by earning from up to three of your most recent assessment periods)
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guarantee element of Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (with no Working Tax Credit) with an annual gross income of no more than £16,190
- Working Tax Credit run-on (paid for the four weeks after the person stops qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
Registering for free school meals
The information needed to register includes:
- personal details (including national insurance number and date of birth) for the parent/carer
- child’s details in full including their date of birth and the school they attend.
If eligible for free school meals and/or milk the start date will normally be within two working days of parents contacting us and entitlement being verified. Children attending maintained nurseries will also qualify for a free school meal as long as they are receiving funded early years education before and after lunch.
Children transferring between schools that use Nottinghamshire County Councils eligibility assessment service do not need to reapply. For children attending a school that does not use this service you should contact the school directly for information about how to apply for free school meals.
